We lived in a 15th century medieval palace...
After living in the farm house for a year we decided to move a little closer to the action. Through a friend we found an apartment on the "noble" floor of a 15th century palazzo (which was on the Italian historical register). The exterior showed centuries of age and was due for an update. The interior (approx. 300 sq meters/3,200 sq ft) had been restored a few years earlier but there was a lot of wasted space (shame on the noble family that built it).The apartment had four bedrooms, four bathrooms, four fireplaces, kitchen, dining room, formal living room (as big as the rest of the apartment), laundry room, and three terraces (one in an internal courtyard). Several of the rooms had fresco painted ceilings and the windows looked original (with bubbles in the glass). The widow who owned the apartment was completely pazza (or crazy). She had been born into privilege and never really worked. Unfortunately, she had spent through her family's assets with travel, jewelry, and the like so she lived with a girlfriend and used the rents for who knows what.
Our time in Spoleto was the exact opposite of Città della Pieve (Italian countryside vs. medieval city center). When we went outside we were right in the thick of things. We walked everywhere (except when traveling outside the city) because parking was a nightmare. Spoleto has a lot to see and experience. We offered free English lessons (beginning and advanced) at our home for our Spoleto neighbors and friends. They never understood why but we just wanted to give something back. It was a fantastic experience!
