Monk on cell phone...
Here's one of my favorites... a monk dressed in the traditional robes talking on a cell phone in front of the church of Santa Chiara (friend to San Francesco). I heard much about Santa Chiara and San Francesco but I never understood exactly what their relationship was (even after having it explained by whatever priest was located at the tomb of San Francesco each time I visited Assisi). We'll leave it at that. The old and new is everywhere. The Italian government spends a tremendous amount of money preserving and restoring the old while at the same time trying to implement the new. It's interesting that in America we light up parking lots. In Italy, they light up old buildings. It's very beautiful when you drive at night but who pays for the electricity? The cost must be enormous.
I love the signs on the side of the road that say "denuclearized zone" which means that the area is free from nuclear-based energy, experiments, etc.. The only thing is that Italy buys power from other nations (including France) that use nuclear power plants so I'm not sure what "denuclearized" really means.
