Rick Steves' favorite...

italy / italian / travel / things to do — medieval cività di bagnoregioCività di Bagnoregio is Rick Steves' (the public television travel guy) favorite small medieval town in Italy. It's about 30 minutes from Orvieto (another great city to see in Tuscany). The town is accessible only from the foot bridge you see (no vehicles) and has only 12 permanent residents (one is a famous Italian director). We visited on the town's saint day so Paige got to ride on a donkey with a cute Italian boy in the main square. This city is definitely worth seeing.

There are many such towns and cities in Italy (which we preferred to visiting the larger cities). Of course, you need to see Rome, and Florence (if you love art), and Venice (because everybody else does) but I wouldn't spend more than a day in each (perhaps 2 days in Rome). It's much more entertaining and educational to get out among the people (in the not so touristy areas). I guess we should make a list of the places we would recommend visiting with 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days in Italy.
