Foghedaboudit!...

italy / italian / culture / life / living — cigarettesMoving from the United States (where smoking is seen less each day) to Italy where it seems that there's always someone smoking near you (an unfair generalization) was a big change (number 2 on the things I didn't like about living in Italy).

I was shocked about a few things, including:
  • Stores will sell cigarettes to children (if they say that it's for their parents).
  • Children start smoking when they are in middle school (11 or 12 years old).
  • Teachers will smoke in front of their students (not inside the school but right at the door).
  • Students will roll up their cigarettes in class and light up as soon as they are out the school door (or excused to go to the bathroom).
  • The "no smoking" in restaurants is many times ignored... technically there's a fine for this but if the owner's friends are all smoking at the table next to you... foghedaboudit!
I look forward to the day when the non-smoking health craze truly reaches Italy.
