Scheggino mio...
Scheggino boasts a few hundred residents and is only 15 minutes by car from Spoleto. I first ran into this city on a bike ride (one of my favorite things to do in Italy). I had asked a friend what would be a good 80-100 kilometer "loop" to take on my bike. The route was "killer" both in beauty and in the amount of hill climbing required.I remember this town because I had to stop there and ask directions when I saw that the road I was told to take went through a 10 kilometer tunnel (which obviously I couldn't do on a bike). So, I ended up taking the old road up over the mountain and down into Spoleto. I asked the cyclist who gave me the directions how much climbing was involved and he said "non fa niente" which means "it's nothing." It's a good thing he said that because had I known the road ahead, I would have called and asked Anne-Marie to come fetch me. As soon as I started up the old road, the pitch stepped up sharply and stayed that way with no rest for about 18 kilometers. I was like over-cooked pasta when I reached Spoleto. As a side note, when the Giro d'Italia bike race came to Spoleto the racers took that same hill climb like they were riding on the flats... those guys are unbelievable!
