Bello Spoleto...

italy / italian / history / travel — spoletoSpoleto is the city we lived in during our second year in Italy (in the region of Umbria). Although most of the city is hidden behind the hill with the castle, you can see it peaking out on the left. We lived on the second floor of a 15th century restored "Palazzo" (or Palace). In Italy (and throughout many parts of Europe), building floors start at zero (so we actually lived on the first floor which was reserved for the noble family). The servants were typically located above and the animals below. We stayed in a 300 sq. meter apartment. Several rooms in the apartment had original frescoes on the ceiling. It was pretty cool.

In Italy the streets, buildings, and even the furniture that we used every day were older than the United States. Older houses have exterior and interior walls and floors that are at least three feet thick (which wreaks havoc on
wireless telephones and networks). This design was to keep the cold or hot from penetrating inside (depending on the time of year). Public utilities (e.g., natural gas, electricity, water, garbage) are often five times more costly than in America... welcome to the Italian way of life!
