Get them away from me...

italy / italian / culture / life / living / way — Hannah climbing treeHannah was frequently chased by the Italian boys who found her blonde hair and blue eyes irresistible. Here she found refuge at the top of a palm tree.

Shortly after moving to Italy, Hannah told us that her teachers at school were always angry and would "yell at the kids." Eventually she realized that Italians are very expressive and speak strongly. However, Italian teachers still use negative reinforcement with their students and oral tests for each subject in front of the class are a big part of their school system.

Children attend school Monday through Saturday until about 1:30pm when they return home for lunch. This is probably the thing we liked the least about living in Italy… daily lunches and no Saturdays.

Pre-school is part of the public school system in Italy (since in most families both the father and mother work). After middle school, students must choose which type of high school they will attend (e.g., language, art, scientific, or trade) and there are five years of high school instead of four. Every day the teachers give serious homework for each class.
