application essay answering the question, What sets me apart from other
applicants?"What sets me apart from other applicants—a fair question to be sure. The years leading up to this moment have never been 'normal.' When I was eight, my mother was diagnosed with a genetic terminal brain disorder. Shortly thereafter she could no longer live at home, and eventually this disease claimed her life. Somewhere in between I learned that I had a 50 percent chance of having inherited the killer gene. At first, I was sure I would die (since I was the middle child). Later, I found out what 50% actually means. One thing is certain, I don’t look at life as others my age do.
